My support for Palestine starts with a fairly basic demand: that Palestinians have the right to run their own lives. To choose their leaders, move, learn, earn a living, and raise children safely. That seems reasonable to me. Jewish sources offer a few useful reminders of why this should be basic.
(שמות כ״ג, ט׳)'You know what it is to be a stranger.' You know how that feels. The Torah presents this memory as a reason to be careful about what you do to others. It is difficult to read the verse and then treat a history of persecution as an unlimited license to use force. 'We have suffered' is not an answer to the question of what is permissible now. (Exodus 23:9)1
(סנהדרין ע״ד ע״א)Even under a real threat, the question of what is permissible remains. In Sanhedrin, a man reports that the ruler has ordered him to kill someone else and threatened to kill him if he refuses. Rabba tells him not to kill, asking: ‘Who says your blood is redder?’ The threat against him is real. Even then, he has no permission to decide that another person's life is worth less. (Sanhedrin 74a)2
(מגילה י׳ ע״ב)And in Megillah, when the angels want to sing while the Egyptians are drowning, God asks: ‘My handiwork is drowning in the sea, and you are singing?’ The Egyptians are the pursuing army. The story knows exactly who they are. And yet, they too are the work of his hands. Anyone who cites Jewish sources to justify force will also have to reckon with the sources that curb enthusiasm for it. (Megillah 10b)3
(גיטין ס״א ע״א)There are practical instructions too. Gittin says: ‘Support poor non-Jews alongside poor Jews.’ The passage also includes visiting the sick and burying the dead, ‘for the sake of peace.’ Provide food, visit sick people, bury people with dignity. As I read it, these obligations do not stop at a checkpoint. (Gittin 61a)4
A Palestinian family should not have to pass an ideological interview to have water. A child does not have to condemn Hamas to have the right to eat. We can have a long discussion about history, borders, and leadership. In the meantime, he needs to be fed. He does not have to finish the discussion first.
